The IT Near Miss Nobody Talks About (But Should)

A box of matches with one burnt match, representing a close call that almost went wrong

Something almost went wrong, and you know it. Maybe it was a former employee who still had a working login, a file that was one click away from landing in the wrong inbox, or a storm that came a little too close to the closet where your server sits. Nothing actually happened. But the question it left behind hasn’t really gone away.

These “near misses” are more common than most Destin-area business owners realize, and they usually don’t come from having no security or no backups at all. They come from businesses that had some of both, got lucky, and then weren’t quite sure what to do with that luck afterward.

The Employee Who Still Had a Key

Someone runs through the list of who has access to what, maybe because it was on the calendar, maybe because a question got asked that made someone check. And there it is: a login that still works for someone who left the company months ago, not on the best terms. As far as anyone can tell, it was never used after they left. But it could have been used at any point during that gap, and there’s no comfortable way to know for sure.

The real question isn’t how to fix it, because that part is easy. It’s how long that door was open without anyone noticing, and whether there’s another one just like it sitting open right now.

One Click From a Problem

A file gets attached to an email. The “To” field fills itself in from autocomplete. A finger hovers over Send. Someone catches it just in time; the attachment held sensitive customer or financial information, and the address it was about to go to was the wrong one entirely. The email gets fixed and sent to the right person. But the moment that follows is uncomfortable: the only thing standing between the business and a very difficult phone call was a second glance that, on a busier day, might not have happened.

The Storm That Almost Took the Data Too

Down here, this one hits close to home. A power surge, a leaking roof, a hurricane that tracks closer than expected, something comes within a few feet of the closet or cabinet where the business’s computer sits. The equipment makes it through fine. But the conversation that follows tends to go somewhere the owner wasn’t ready for: if that had gone differently, what actually would have happened to the data? Is there a copy of it anywhere else?

For some businesses, the honest answer is that the only copy of everything that matters was sitting in that same room the whole time.

Recovered, But Only Just

A folder gets deleted by accident, or months of work just disappears from where it’s supposed to be. IT pulls it back from a backup, and the immediate panic passes. But the version that comes back is a few hours old, and whatever was done in between is simply gone. Most of it came back, and that counted as a win. But it raises the obvious question: what if the backup had been a day older, or hadn’t existed at all?

What a Near Miss Is Actually Telling You

A real incident forces your hand; you have to act, and the decisions get made whether you’re ready or not. A near miss raises exactly the same questions, but leaves the choice up to you: deal with it now, while there’s still time, or wait for the version of this story that doesn’t end with “and everything was fine.”

The access review, the habit of double-checking before hitting send, the backup that actually lives somewhere else, the recovery plan that’s been tested rather than just assumed. None of that requires something to go wrong first. It just takes someone deciding the near miss was warning enough.

If something recently made you think “that could have gone so much worse,” that feeling is worth paying attention to.
